Tim Lowe at Keepos was there right at the start when Smartedge was originally invented by his friend Richard O'Connor.
Tim comments: "Being a keen gardener myself, I remember thinking at the time that it was such a good solution to the age old problem of maintaining lawn edges and I decided to go about marketing the product."
"With a patent pending, in its original prototype form of one metre lengths, without any manufacturer in place, we took it to exhibit at "Glee" to see what the professionals thought of it. Smartedge received an extremely favourable response from everyone who visited our stand. It seemed, however, that everyone was tired of lawnedge products which came in short lengths that had to be joined every few feet."
"Taking that on board we set about finding a manufacturer who could make Smartedge in a continual length - initially without much luck. Eventually we found a manufacture who was prepared to make a purpose built machine to manufacture Smartedge to the exacting standards necessary for it to do the job it was designed to do in continual lengths of up to 50 metres."
With many advance orders on the books and after a few teething problems - as you would expect with any new process - we eventually got the first product out in May 2003, a bit too late to really have effect in the retail market that year but it was proving to be very popular with professional gardeners at various stately homes and borough councils - who with large grassed areas to maintain immediately saw its long term benefits.
Tim became Sales director of Smartedge Ltd and set about spreading the word.
Only three years on apart from sales in the UK, Smartedge is now being sold in America, Germany, France, Ireland and The Netherlands with many more countries expressing an interest.
We are very happy to still be closely associated with the product as a distributor.
